Introduced in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level names remained working.
